Fort Roofing — re-roofs with solar built in

A new roof.
Solar built in.
One team.

We specialise in complete re-roofs where the solar is part of the roof, not bolted on top of it. Our roofers strip the old roof back to the rafters and rebuild it with in-roof solar laid in alongside new slate or tile, and our electricians connect it up. One survey, one scaffold, one price and one handover - and a roof that earns its keep from the day it's finished.

A complete roof,
not a panel job

The roof

Rebuilt properly, from the rafters up

  • Old coverings, battens and felt stripped back to the rafters
  • Timbers checked, with any repairs priced up front
  • New breathable membrane, battens and counter-battens
  • New natural slate, slate-effect or tile to suit the house
  • Leadwork, valleys, ridges, hips and verges done properly
  • Fascias, soffits and gutters renewed if they need it
The solar

Part of the roof, not on top of it

  • In-roof solar modules laid in place of slates or tiles
  • Sits flush with the roofline - no frames above the roof
  • Designed by us for your roof, your usage and your shading
  • Inverter, and a battery if you want one
  • Grid connection paperwork with the network operator
  • Monitoring, so you can see what your roof is making
The paperwork

Handled, start to finish

  • One survey, one quote and one contract
  • Planning and conservation advice where it applies
  • Building Control notification for the re-roof
  • MCS certificate for the solar
  • Your roof and solar guarantees in one handover pack
  • Aftercare from the team that built it

Four steps.
One scaffold.

Step 01 — Survey
A free roof survey

We look at the condition of your roof and timbers, measure the roof area, check shading and orientation, and flag any planning or conservation questions.

Step 02 — Design
One design, one price

You get a single quote covering the whole roof and the solar, with the generation and savings modelled for your house - so you can see the roof as an investment, not just a cost.

Step 03 — Build
Strip and rebuild

The scaffold goes up once. Our roofers strip the roof, fit the new membrane and battens, lay the in-roof solar and slate or tile around it, and finish the leadwork.

Step 04 — Handover
Connect, certify, hand over

Our electricians connect the inverter and any battery, we commission and test the system, notify the network operator, and hand over your MCS certificate and guarantees.

Roofers who know solar.
Electricians who know roofs.

Most homes get a re-roof from a roofer and solar from someone else, years apart. Doing it in one go, with one team that does both every week, costs less and gives you a better roof.

The numbers

Spend on the roof
you need, and get
a return on it

A conventional re-roof is money spent once with no return. When a roof is due anyway, building solar into it means part of that spend starts paying you back. We model the figures for your house at the survey.

10–16 kWpTypical full-roof system

When a Fort Roofing
project makes sense

Due a new roof

Slipping slates, tired felt, leaks

If your roof needs replacing in the next few years, it's the best time to think about solar. You pay for the scaffold and the strip-out once.

Looks matter

Period homes and conservation areas

Flush in-roof solar keeps the line of the roof. We advise on planning as part of the survey. More on building-integrated solar →

Big roof, big return

Detached and multi-pitch roofs

The more good roof area, the bigger the system and the better the figures. See the solar reroof figures →

Things people
usually ask

Do you do roofs without solar?

Fort Roofing specialises in complete re-roofs with solar built in - that's where we add the most value. If you only need a repair or a re-roof without solar, call us and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right people for it.

I already have solar panels on my roof. Can you help?

Yes. If your roof is due for replacement, we can take the old panels off, re-roof, and build new in-roof solar into the new roof. We'll look at whether any of the existing equipment is worth keeping at the survey.

Will in-roof solar be allowed in a conservation area?

In-roof solar sits flush with the roofline and comes in slate-effect and tile-effect finishes, and it is widely accepted in conservation areas where panels on top of the roof would not be. Listed buildings always need consent. We'll advise on your property at the survey.

Does in-roof solar keep the weather out as well as slate?

Yes. The in-roof system is designed to form part of the weatherproof roof, with its own flashings into the slate or tile around it, over a new breathable membrane.

How long does it take, and do I need to move out?

You don't need to move out. How long a project takes depends on the size of the roof and the weather - we'll give you a programme with your quote, and the roof is kept weathertight every night while the work is going on.

Which areas do you cover?

We're based in Morpeth and work across Northumberland and Tyneside, and through our roofing partners we're extending Fort Roofing further across North East England. Call us and we'll tell you who would look after your roof.

Is your roof
due for replacement?

Book a free roof survey. We'll look at the condition of the roof, what solar it could carry, and what the whole project would cost and earn.

Are you a
roofer?

We're looking for roofing partners across North East England to re-roof with solar built in, with Fort designing the solar, supplying the kit, doing the electrical work and MCS-certifying.
